A UK ETA is a digital permission for certain travelers entering the United Kingdom for a short stay such as tourism, business, or transit. Travelers from visa-free countries need a UK ETA. Examples: an American on holiday in London, a Canadian at a conference in Manchester, or an Australian transiting through Heathrow. Children and babies also need their own ETA. Travelers from countries that are not visa-free, such as India or China, apply for a regular UK visa instead.
In some cases it can take 24 to 72 hours if additional verification is needed. Make sure your ETA is approved before boarding, because airlines check this prior to departure.
