ETA or visa: what is the difference?

A UK ETA is a digital travel permission for a short stay. A visa is a more extensive permission for a longer stay, work, or study. For most holidays, business trips, and transit you need an ETA rather than a visa.

When do you need an ETA?

Travelers from visa-free countries need a UK ETA for tourism, business, or transit. Examples: a Dutch traveler on holiday in London, an American on a business trip, or an Australian transiting through Heathrow. Children and babies also need their own ETA.

When do you need a visa?

Travelers from countries that are not visa-free, such as India or China, apply for a regular UK visa instead of an ETA. A visa, rather than an ETA, also applies for a longer stay, work, or study.

No ETA and no visa needed

• You have a British or Irish passport
• You have residency status in the UK
• You already have a valid British visa
